The next question to consider is the nature of the physiological process which underlies desire. This is of particular interest to us, because of the important part which desires or wishes are supposed to play in the causation of mental disorder. But before we can discuss intelligently this question of the physiology of the wish, we must understand clearly what the word, wish means to us. The psychoanalyst, we have seen, is accustomed to think and talk about a wish as if it were a living entity, a person or thing which moves and has its being in a sort of two-room dwelling place called the mind. For us, however, a wish is a very different thing. For us a wish is nothing more than a certain phenomenon of consciousness which occurs as the result of a certain physiological process.
