provide an overview of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as it has been used successfully with a variety of elder outpatients having mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety disorders / review the research literature on psychotherapeutic intervention studies conducted with older adults delineate several common issues that bring older adults to therapy and sketch out some basic similarities and differences in doing our preferred approach—CBT with older adults / review the overall treatment process, including some general points on assessment of cognitive and emotional functioning / focus on the importance of socializing the elder patient into the unfamiliar role of being a client in CBT / review studies aimed at assessing the efficacy of CBT because that model (and its variants) makes up the bulk of current outcome research / briefly describe a variety of other applications of CBT, such as individual case reports and descriptions of group psychoeducational programs, to illustrate the many ways in which CBT has been (and can be) used successfully with older adults / conclude with suggestions for future research changing core beliefs (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
