It was once thought that schizophrenia, or "dementia praecox" as it was once called, was a disease of the young, that it attacked during the age of puberty, and that its effects were always followed by ultimate and complete mental deterioration. It is true that there is a high incidence rate among the teen-ager, but the belief is that such a condition can and does exist both before and after adolescence and that there is a very good chance for recovery. Schizophrenia is the most common of all psychoses, accounting for about 20 per cent of first admissions to mental hospitals in this country. Since the mental conditions associated with this disease are of a chronic nature and last a long time, sometimes for life, there is a greater number in any given hospital at one time than any other type of disorder. Estimates attribute 50 per cent of the mental hospital population to this condition. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
