The major portion of this chapter will be given over to the direct consideration and evaluation of our present knowledge concerning the expressions of emotion in the narrow sense of the term. The material which is available on the description of affective processes of mental life will be considered briefly under the heading of "Feeling." The neuro-humoral basis of emotion has been taken up in Chapter 6 and will be discussed in the present chapter only when it may be considered as a part of the expressive mechanisms.
