A practitioner's guide to telemental health: How to conduct legal, ethical, and evidence-based... Telemental health (TMH) services that use videoconferencing (VC) have greatly expanded ways to provide quality clinical care across diverse general and underserved populations. Although clinical services via VC share many of the same considerations as traditional in-office services, providers must carefully consider the unique advantages and challenges of VC to assure optimal standards of care. This chapter provides step-by-step guidance for conducting direct clinical services that include the range of behavioral health treatments with clients/patients. We specifically focus on setting up the clinical space and other telepractice preparation. We then summarize content and process components important to initial and follow-up telepractice sessions, as well as after-session components including documentation. If you are seeing clients/patients in a remote clinic environment, remember that the clinic will want to follow established protocols across preparation, initial sessions, and ongoing sessions, including protocol checklists to assist in monitoring areas of strengths and areas for improvement. If your practice primarily reaches individuals in their homes or other unsupervised setting, you must be cognizant of additional steps needed to safely and successfully deliver services to these settings. Remember that without clinical staff on-site, you will have to rely on your preestablished procedures for contacting local emergency services and/or a family member in an emergency. The integration of other technologies into the VC process will also be discussed, especially mobile devices and web-based applications. Abstract

(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
