Telemental health has evolved from a rich history and variety of terms as different groups have sought to name their versions of behavioral and mental health care delivered across geographical distances (Maheu, Pulier, Wilhelm, McMenamin, & Brown-Connolly, 2004). Such terms include telepsychiatry, telepsychology, behavioral telehealth, telebehavioral health, distance counseling, online therapy, e-therapy, web psychology, Internet therapy, teletherapy, among others. For the purposes of this guidebook, we use telemental health or TMH as an umbrella term to refer to all of the names and types of behavioral and mental health services that are provided via telecommunications technologies. We use the phrases TMH practitioners and telepractitioners to refer to professionals engaged in the practice of either clinical or nonclinical aspects of health care provided via communications technology.
