Abstract

As with any new area of practice, the ethics of conducting assessment via technology requires specific experience, training, supervision, and consultation. Those requirements are paramount when shifting in-person assessment to online or other telehealth modalities. Telemental health (TMH) providers must consider how the test results will be used (e.g., for clinical assessment, symptom monitoring, data collection for research). Also, how will informed consent be completed? Does the administration of the assessment via technology have an impact on reliability and validity of test scores? Who will administer the assessment? How should the instrument be scored and interpreted? How will the results be explained to the client/patient and, with children, to the parent/guardian? How will the assessment protocol be followed and test security maintained? Finally, how will test data and evaluation results be shared with other professionals involved in the patient’s care? In this chapter, we provide the practitioner with an overview of the best methods for conducting clinical assessments across distance with technologies. This includes selecting measures/tests, ensuring optimal assessment conditions and procedures when using telehealth technologies, and applying best practices for administering assessments remotely.
