Of the many sciences that have made contributions to modern educational theory and practice three are outstanding: biology, psychology, and sociology. Biology is the science of life. Its great aim is to discover the facts and principles that throw light on the origin, development, distribution, structure, and functions of plants and of animals. Psychology, the science of behavior, searches for the facts and principles that explain thought, feeling, or action. Sociology, the science of society, investigates the phenomena of human groupings, past and present, with the object of finding the facts and principles that explain the trends of societal development and progress. A study of the significant contributions of biology to education is called educational biology; of psychology, educational psychology; and of sociology, educational sociology. The educational aspects of these sciences are to engage our attention in the first four chapters of this book. Bespeaking for the reader the hospitality of mind essential to entertaining new ideas, we shall first consider the bearings of biology upon education.
