Abstract

In carrying out a project, whatever may be its nature, problems are encountered that demand group attention. To choose the proper colors, styles, or materials is as much a problem for kindergarten children as is the making of patterns or the cutting out of dolls' dresses. Faithfully to represent a mining community, with its mines (tunnels, shafts, breakers, gondolas, and tracks), its streets, homes, stores, church, theater, community house, police department, and fire department, is to discover and solve a group of problems. Learning the arias of the principal operas demands the acquiring of information with regard to the origin and purpose of the composition, the selection of the leading motifs, and the gathering of ideas with regard to the structure and form of the composition. The writing of each short story in the publication contest is a complex of problems: choice of subject, arrangement of incidents, introduction of conversation, and the securing of unity. The civics class finds problems in determining the meaning of the effective organization of labor, the respective rights of employer and employee, and the possible forms that the organization of labor may assume. The project usually offers more than one problem, and the problem therefore becomes the typical unit of instruction. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
