Abstract

In this chapter the authors consider examples from their own research related to socioemotional functioning in later life and attempt to show that negative presumptions interfere with scientific progress. There are many reasons to believe that recognition of positive aspects of aging would improve the science and probably the lives of older adults. However, the authors see as many problems as advantages with a positive psychology movement. The authors suggest generating an even-handed characterization of the problems and strengths associated with aging. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
