It is the purpose of this paper to study the influence of past experience upon the perception of visual forms. Although many theories of perception ascribe great significance to the part played by experience it is difficult to find any avowed specification of what the concept really means. In usage, however, "experience" as a psychical factor usually has the following meaning. Former experiences with arrangement A of a certain stimulus complex, S, leave behind a disposition favouring the apprehension of A upon a repetition of S. Thus if abc has been previously experienced, the presentation of abcde will tend on a later occasion to be experienced as abc/de.
