RESENAS JAVIER KRAUEL. Imperial Emotions. Cultural Responses to Myths of Empire in Fin-DeSiècle Spain. Liverpool: University of Liverpool Press, 2013. 206 pp. Adolfo Campoy-Cubillo Javier Krauel proposes a reading of the classical texts of the Spanish Regenerationist movement that concentrates on the emotional rather than the logical component of each text. From Miguel de Unamuno's En torno al casticismo to Angel Ganivet's Idearium Español, including Ramiro de Maeztu's Hacia otra España, and Prat de la Riba's La nacionalitat catalana, Krauel's book provides a well-documented, thorough reading of the texts in their historical contexts. These works, like the intellectual trajectories of their authors, are riddled with contradictions and seemingly inconsistent arguments that have puzzled generations of scholars. Krauel's focus on the emotional dimension of the Regenerationist discourses, however, proves to be extremely productive. It is difficult to approach the Regenerationist canon from a strictly rational perspective, but the ambivalence of emotional discourse accounts for what up to now we had learnt to accept as inconsistencies. Chapter 1 presents a detailed account of the 1892 celebrations of Columbus's first trip to America.
