The present article explores the powerful draw of consumerism in the lives of the female protagonists of La de Bringas and Sister Carrie, demonstrating the effects of this âeconomy of desireâ in their remarkably similar narratives. Both women, compelled by their own desires, sacrifice themselves to the male-dominated market, thereby objectifying themselves in their quest for material possessions.
