Pathogenic Nationalism: Epidemic Outbreak and Xenophobic Patriotism in Galdós's Zaragoza <p>Abstract:</p><p>This essay explores the significance of the epidemic outbreak in <i>Zaragoza</i> (1874) by Benito Pérez Galdós and its contribution to the construction of nationalism through the rewriting of the Peninsular War in his <i>Episodios nacionales</i>. By revisiting this novel through the lens of the yellow fever outbreak in 1809, I suggest that Galdós offers a critique of nationalism through his incorporation of the epidemic in <i>Zaragoza</i>. In this novel, Galdós identifies a pathogenic condition intrinsic to nationalism, a lesson intended for his contemporaries, but one that still necessitates continued vigilance in the twenty-first century. Nationalism creates a belief in rigid borders that demarcate domestic territory. An epidemic undermines this imagined binary that separates exterior space from the interior as the virus easily crosses borders. In Galdós&apos;s novel, the inhabitants of Zaragoza project their exalted patriotism onto the border, imagining it as an impermeable boundary that protects the health and security of the collective body. However, as the Saragossans succumb to the disease, the outbreak initiates an internal social breakdown that turns the population against itself.</p><p>Resumen:</p><p>Este ensayo explora la significación del estallido epidémico en la novela <i>Zaragoza</i> (1874) de Benito Pérez Galdós, así como su contribución al nacionalismo construido a través de la reescritura de la Guerra de la Independencia en los <i>Episodios nacionales</i>. Sugiero que una aproximación a <i>Zaragoza</i> a través de la epidemia de la fiebre amarilla identifica una condición patogénica intrínseca al nacionalismo, una lección dirigida a los contemporáneos de Galdós que todavía sigue vigente, y que, en la actualidad, requiere continua vigilancia. El nacionalismo aboga por unas fronteras rígidas que circunscriben el territorio doméstico. Una epidemia socava el sistema binario imaginado que aísla el espacio exterior del interior, ya que el virus transgrede las fronteras con facilidad.
