Abstract:

Galdós and Alas, both strongly critical of, and criticized by, the Catholic Church in Spain during their lifetime, give powerful representations in their respective novelsâGloria (1878) and La Regenta (1884-85)âof a true faith in some characters, which is projected unto the faces and eyes of the statues paraded in the holy Week processions. There is a strong possibility that the earlier novel influenced the later one in the development of this topic.
