Abstract:

This essay studies the nautical motif in Emilia Pardo Bazánâs 1889 novel, Insolación, principally in chapters six and seven. Largely ignored by critics, this maritime imagery serves to underscore the theme of female sexual desire in both the protagonistâs brief liaison with a navy lieutenant before her marriage and her current desire for Diego Pacheco. This imagery, along with references to the sun as an erotic force and to Apollo, Cybele, and Venus, suggests that AsÃsâs repressed sexual desire is the real protagonist of the novel and that Pacheco serves mainly as a catalyst to awaken AsÃsâs dormant libido.
