Lewiston, NY: Edwin Mellen, 2012. 625 pp. Thomas R. Franz The present volume is a reprinting of the translations of the four Torquemada novels that Trimble published with a different press in 1996. To these translations Trimble has added four outstanding introductory essays. The latter are some of the best short introductions to Galdós’s literary art—and to this particular series of novels—available to an English-speaking reader. Some scholars may fault the translator-commentator for neglecting the metaliterary dimension inherent in Cruz del Águila’s gradual—though always elusive—re-creation of the character Torquemada. The commentaries stick close to the plots but demonstrate how, with a master novelist like Galdós, story lines promptly expand into channels of psychological development and social commentary. Trimble discusses many interesting examples of Galdós’s realism in these novels, but he turns away from pointing out how Torquemada’s incomplete triumph over his origins still retains a strong thread of 1880s naturalism.
