<p>Abstract:</p><p>El presente trabajo pretende demostrar la posible relación existente entre el texto médico del psiquiatra francés Esquirol y la novela primeriza de Benito Pérez Galdós, <i>La sombra</i>. Se analizan y ponen de relieve cuáles son las similitudes entre ambos textos, en cuanto al tipo de locura manifiestada, qué la causa y qué desórdenes de la sensibilidad, la inteligencia y la voluntad provoca. Asimismo se trata de fijar la función tematizadora de la locura que desempeña el texto cientÃfico como base para las descripciones del estado mental del protagonista, Anselmo.</p><p>Abstract:</p><p>This paper aims to demonstrate the possible relationship between the medical text of the French psychiatrist Esquirol and the novel of Benito Pérez Galdós, <i>La sombra</i>. The similarities in both texts of the type of insanity manifested are analyzed and highlighted, as are the causes and disorders of sensitivity, intelligence and will which it effects. It is also an effort to determine the thematizing function of madness that the scientific text plays as a base for the descriptions of the mental state of the protagonist, Anselmo.</p>
