Editorial Dear readers,The world is in turmoil as we speak. Many societies have not yet recovered from the covid-19 pandemic and the havoc it created on social and economic levels – in particular in countries in the Global South, where the pandemic and the various levels of confinement have had a long-lasting impact on domains such as human rights, education and healthcare. The effects of climate change have manifested themselves now to such an extent that they can no longer be denied; more importantly (cynically enough), they have manifested themselves in Europe and North America, as a result of which the world is now urged to act immediately. The war in Ukraine has resulted in increasing food and energy prices worldwide, leading to global crisis, inflation and famine on an almost unprecedented scale.Nevertheless, amid economic crises – which often have a direct impact on households in Africa – amid strikes in academia, amid ongoing restrictions related to fieldwork and student/researcher mobility, academic research at and in partnership with African research institutions is thriving. As an illustration, our journal Afrika Focus is continuously receiving an increased number of high-level manuscripts written by African scholars.
