DOI: 10.11136/jqh.1210.02.07 Keith Small’s Textual Criticism and Qur'ān Manuscripts is a clear and well-researched study of what early Qur'ān manuscripts tell us of the ancient shape of the Qur'ānic text. Small focuses on the ways in which the text of those manuscripts vary from the now-standard Arabic edition of the Qur’ān , an edition established by a committee organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Education and first published by the Amīriyya Press in Cairo on July 10, 1924. Small’s work is unlike earlier works of Qur’ān manuscripts. Colin Baker’s Qur’ān Manuscripts: Calligraphy, Illumination, Design offers descriptions and color images of Qur’ān manuscripts from different periods. Francois Déroche’s La transmission écrite du Coran dans les débuts de l’islam,is a technical study of one particular ancient manuscript (the codex Parisino-petropolitanus). Small’s book offers a survey of 21 manuscripts and one printed edition of the Qur’ān.
