Documenta Servetiana supported Gustavus Adolphus. The fall of Magdeburg temporarily lessened his reputation; but his victory at Breitenfeld immediately raised it to its greatest height. Even then, however, the quiescent group retained its influence. The great majority of the people expected Gustavus Adolphus to make 110 territorial conquests, but only to establish peace. When, however, the war continued with no prospect of an early end, war weariness and the longing for peace became widespread. Since the end of 1631 the chief aim of Swedish propaganda was to keep the Germans interested in the war. German propaganda was now completely dominated by the radicals, who tried to arouse the reluctant population to engage in a crusade against the papacy and to raise Gustavus Adolphus to the imperial throne. After the death of the king and the changes in the Swedish political aims in Germany under the leadership of Oxenstierna, the Germans lost confidence in th e sincerity of the Swedish promises. The great majority of the moderates, together with the governments, went over to the anti-Swedish camp, so that the grouping of the first war years was repeated.
