Professor Dan Setlacec

Professor Dan Setlacec DOI: 10.2478/v10206-011-0010-y Editorial Annals of Fundeni Hospital, volume 16, no. 3 - 4, July - December 2011 I. Popescu "Dan Setlacec" Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation, Fundeni Clinical Institute, Bucharest, Romania Professor Dan Setlacec would have been 90 years old this October. Unfortunately, he left us two years ago, leaving an immense empty space, infinite regrets, but also a strong school of surgery in Fundeni Hospital. The biography of the Professor is very well known already. It will be useless to remind all his great achievements in medicine and, definitely, beyond the space of this article. However, we have to emphasize two essential accomplishments: he was one of the pioneers of cardiac surgery in Romania and, probably, the most complete general surgeon of this country. As a general surgeon, he approached almost all the areas of this fascinating specialty: esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, small bowel, colorectal, adrenal gland, retroperitoneal tumors, portal hypertension etc. He was an inborn teacher, quite severe but always good-hearted, positive and, last but not least, with an incredible sense of humor. The result was that all his students and co-workers not only respected him, but also really loved him. Annals of Surgery, who celebrates 15 years of uninterrupted existence is honored to devote this issue to Professor Setlacec. The best homage for the great teacher he was is, probably, a presentation of the work of what we can undoubtedly call "His School". The Department of General Surgery that he run for so many years (1964-1986) has become now The Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantion "Dan Setlacec". It was his initiative to develop liver surgery and liver transplantation that he transferred to his younger co-workers. Because of this and because also of the difficulty of this formidable procedure, we consider it the greatest achievement of the Center. The author of this article was in charge of the liver transplant program, after 3 years of uninterrupted training in the USA. But a single man could not accomplish liver transplantation; it is always teamwork, and in our case it was the result of the hard work of many surgeons, anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pediatricians, pathologists, immunologists, microbiologists, laboratory physicians etc. Due to the difficult conditions of the Romanian Health Care system it was not an easy task. Therefore, the fact that now we did more than 300 liver transplants with immediate and late survival comparable with most of the international centers, could be considered a great success! Another major achievement is the sphincter Address for correspondence: Irinel Popescu, MD, FACS, FEBS, Professor of Surgery, "Dan Setlacec" Center for General Surgery and Liver Transplantation, Fundeni Clinical Institute, Sos. Fundeni, 258, 022328, Bucharest, Romania, e-mail: irinel.popescu220@gmail.com Annals of Fundeni Hospital, volume 16, no 3 - 4, 2011 I. Popescu saving procedure in familial polyposis and ulcerative recto colitis. Associate Professor Mihnea Ionescu introduced the ileo-anal pouch anastomosis in Romanian surgery and he has today the largest series in the country. Associated Professor Catalin Vasilescu was a promoter of miniinvasive surgery, with remarkable results in the surgery of the spleen. Dr. Victor Tomulescu has one of the largest series in the world of miniivasive tymectomies for miastenia gravis. Dr. Gabriel Mitulescu, together with the urologists from our hospital and a plastic surgeon (Catalin Stingu) obtained very good results in advanced pelvic malignancies performing extensive pelvec- tomies with difficult plastic reconstructions. Finally, the philosophy of Professor Setlacec to promote medicine and surgery through the education of the young generation is reflected also in the work of the Foundation named after him. Dr. Silviu Ciurea is underlying some of the principles that guide the activity of the Foundation and some of its accomplishments. All the work included in this special issue of Annals of Fundeni is a just a modest homage for a great man, a unique surgeon and a great Professor! And, at the same time, a message for the new generations to preserve the Treasure that the great Founding Fathers of the Romanian surgery left us.
