The "Dan Setlacec" foundation

The "Dan Setlacec" foundation DOI: 10.2478/v10206-011-0017-4 Special Article Annals of Fundeni Hospital, volume 16, no. 3 - 4, July - December 2011 S. Ciurea Dan Setlacec Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation, Fundeni Clinical Institute, Bucharest, Romania The "Dan Setlacec" Foundation was created on February 10, 2000 under the name of "Foundation for Liver Surgery" by the initiative of a group of thirty-two founding members, having as President Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu. Non-governmental organization, non-profit, and with apolitical character, the Foundation was established in order to improve the management of patients with liver disorders. The Foundation's location was set in the Fundeni Clinical Institute the Department of General Surgery. In 2010 the members of the Founding Council decided to change the name of the Foundation in order to pay tribute to Professor Dan Setlacec, creator of surgical school, and "father" of many Romanian and foreign surgeons. At the same time the Foundation's spectrum of activity has been diversified in order to cover most of the digestive diseases. All the Foundation's achievements were made possible by legally attracting, managing and using financial and material resources. The main sources of income for the Foundation were donations from sponsors, either individuals or companies. According to the orientations outlined by Professor Dan Setlacec, the Foundation aimed mainly to financially support the training of physicians specializing in digestive surgery, gastroenterology, imaging and digestive oncology and the scientific research in the Fundeni Clinical Institute. In 2000, with support from the Foundation, the National Liver Transplantation Program started successfully in the Fundeni Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation; to date, nearly 300 patients have received a new liver. In the past 10 years the "Dan Setlacec" Foundation has endowed the operative theater from the Fundeni Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation with furniture and up to date medical equipment (upper GI endoscope, ultrasound device, electro-cardiograph, laparoscopic digital camera); on the ward, efforts have been made to improve the accommodation. The Foundation has helped the creation of the "Fundeni Center of Experimental Surgery" in a separate building from the Fundeni platform; since then many experimental studies and operative demonstrations on animals have been performed with the occasion of the yearly Postgraduate course of the Romanian Chapter of the "International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists IASGO". The Foundation has provided a strong network of computers for the currently named "Dan Setlacec" Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation. This has allowed the creation of medical databases on specific issues of medical interest; the doctors can access the information on the Internet; connection to other departments' and hospitals' computer networks (imaging, hepato-gastroenterology) was enabled, so that telemedicine activity was facilitated. The Foundation has initiated and supported the training of surgeons and gastroenterologists, has sponsored the participation to medical courses and congresses. Since 2000 the Foundation has participated in organizing symposia and postgraduate courses of the Romanian Chapter of the IASGO. The "Dan Setlacec" Foundation has provided funds for equipping the library from the "Dan Setlacec" Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation and for making tele-transmission from the operating rooms possible. Another important contribution of the Foundation was the development of research studies in digestive diseases of surgical interest. The foundation has been a partner in many research programs (VIASAN, CNMP), initiated in the "Dan Setlacec" Surgical Center and the Fundeni Center of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Presently it is involved, among others, in conducting a European fund financed program - "Specialization for performance, efficiency and response in organ transplantation SPER". Thanks to a donor support (Mrs. Carmen Arusoaie), who remained anonymous until our Professor passed away, a monthly allowance has been allocated to the Professor, through the Foundation. In December 2010 the Foundation has awarded for the first time the "Dan Setlacec" Prize for Research to a young scientist (Dr. Bogdan Dorobanþu, assistant professor in the Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation), with the intention to perpetuate this event and make it a tradition. In the future the Foundation will seek to achieve new goals, in the spirit of permanent improvement of surgical teaching and research inherited from Professor Dan Setlacec. One of these goals will be the "Dan Setlacec" scholarship for studying abroad.
