Archives of Natural History 50.1 (2023): iii–vi Edinburgh University Press DOI: 10.3366/anh.2023.0823 © The Society for the History of Natural History www.euppublishing.com/anh I am delighted to celebrate with you the publication of the 50th volume of Archives of Natural History, an achievement resulting from 87 years of successful effort by the Society for the History of Natural History (SHNH) together with the authors, reviewers, editors, associate editors, editorial boards and our publishers, Edinburgh University Press, who have contributed so much to the journal. Both the journal and the society started life under different names, and together represent the changes and the continuities that have marked their aims for over eight decades. The journal cannot be considered apart from the society. Both were the concern of a small group of zoologists, botanists and bibliographers (instigated by Francis James Griffin (1904–1990), Charles Davies Sherborn (1861–1942) and Arthur Francis Hemming (1893–1964)), whose friendship and shared interests led to them establishing The Society for the Bibliography of Natural History in March 1936 (Wheeler 2006; Stearn 2007). According to Hemming (1943: xi), the “principal object” from the outset was to produce a journal, of which normally not less than two parts shall be published
