Both the journal and the society started life under different names, and together represent the changes and the continuities that have marked their aims for over eight decades. The journal cannot be considered apart from the society. Both were the concern of a small group of zoologists, botanists and bibliographers (instigated by Francis James Griffin (1904–1990), Charles Davies Sherborn (1861–1942) and Arthur Francis Hemming (1893–1964)), whose friendship and shared interests led to them establishing The Society for the Bibliography of Natural History in March 1936 (Wheeler 2006; Stearn 2007). According to Hemming (1943: xi), the “principal object” from the outset was to produce a journal, of which normally not less than two parts shall be published http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Natural History Edinburgh University Press
