Reviews MARGARET STEWART, The Architectural, Landscape and Constitutional Plans of the Earl of Mar, 1700–32, Four Courts Press, 2016,ISBN: 978-1-84682-575-0,£55 It is a delight to see this impressive book now published – the outcome of a lengthy and careful academic study of the life, career and significance of John Erskine, Earl of Mar. And as Mar was exiled in Europe for leading the Jacobite Rising of 1715, the author, enterprisingly, has followed his journey. Consequently, the well-footnoted sources include an impressive set of archival references in Britain, Germany, France and Italy. The book opens with an engagingly written preface. This introduces Mar: an aristocrat, politician, Jacobite military commander and designer of buildings, gardens and landscapes. To all of which can now be added Mar’s status as a proto-Enlightenment figure. Mar is well-known to mainstream historians. He has been somewhat unloved: being seen as a wily politician who advocated Scotland’s union with England in 1707 (only to change his mind and raise an army in rebellion to the new status quo he had helped construct) to achieve a ‘winning draw’ in battle against a government army in 128 ) Reviews 1715 but who then failed to press his potential advantage
