And as Mar was exiled in Europe for leading the Jacobite Rising of 1715, the author, enterprisingly, has followed his journey. Consequently, the well-footnoted sources include an impressive set of archival references in Britain, Germany, France and Italy. The book opens with an engagingly written preface. This introduces Mar: an aristocrat, politician, Jacobite military commander and designer of buildings, gardens and landscapes. To all of which can now be added Mar’s status as a proto-Enlightenment figure. Mar is well-known to mainstream historians.
