As two volumes of essays appear on Beckett and translation it seems that the notion of translation is itself undergoing something of a transformation in Beckett studies. Whether, etymologically, we take translation as a concept of ‘drawing across’ – as John Pilling’s essay asserts in Samuel Beckett and Translation (ed. José Francisco Fernández and Mar Garre Garcia) – or ‘carrying across’ – as Adar and Sonis offer in Translating Samuel Beckett around the World (ed. José Francisco Fernández and Pascale Sardin), ‘translation’ does not stay still. Taking an overview of these two collections, it is a broad enough concept to include Beckett’s self-translations, his translations of the works of others, translations of him by others (with or without recourse to the author), adaptations, translation and bilingualism as an aesthetic principle within Beckett’s work, Journal of Beckett Studies 31.2 (2022): 208–219 Edinburgh University Press © Journal of Beckett Studies www.euppublishing.com/jobs Book Reviews 209
