When I first began teaching an undergraduate course on general management in 2000, I dutifully covered the canon of management theory, but I also wanted to anchor my lectures on a person, an institution, and a global system that I could spin out across multiple lectures. After considering a handful of potential metonyms, I settled on Jack Welch, General Electric (GE), and the global capi- talist system as my course theme. With Welch having just retired as CEO, GE was still the darling of financial analysts, and given the company’s long history of spearheading new management theories, it seemed a good choice. I could even suggest that my students, for a break from dull articles, watch episodes of 30 Rock, an American sitcom that satirized the foibles of corporate culture within GE.
