Needless to say, this is hardly suited to our present-day development, ~ut the other extre~e o.f se~f-cons.ciousness in the search for new designs ~s no better. Functionalism III design has been badly overworked resulting III a bleak lack of grace and beauty and there is no reason why use and beauty should not be combined. Pottery is full of paradoxes as it is the most abstract of the crafts and yet fulfills endless day to day requirements; from the drain pipe and ink bottle to the most delicate porcelain bowl is only a question of degree and each can be perfect of its kind which includes being pleasing to the eye and touch as well as functional. It is no good trying to make a pot until you know exactly what you want to make or why you want it to be as you do. There can be no doubt at all as to the therapeutic value of working with clay, possibly it's very plasticity may be one of its reasons, but the matter does not end .there-the Chinese held that some pots exerted a healing influence and recent investigations tend to show that this was no mere legend.
