[In this chapter, the background of the work presented in this thesis will be briefly outlined. This includes a short description of the various approaches employed in studying QCD, the theory of the strong interaction, among them the method of QCD sum rules, which will be they main tool to be used in this work. Furthermore, the motivation for introducing a novel analysis method for QCD sum rules, based on the maximum entropy method will be explained and possible areas of applications will be discussed. Finally, the outline of the thesis will be given in the last section of this chapter.]
