[The floodings in Metro Manila due to typhoons and monsoons is exacerbated due to human factors associated with urbanization especially factors that include: dumping of solid waste in the river, encroachment of river banks especially by illegal settlements; poor land use planning or implementation of it that allow legal or illegal settlements in flood prone areas; and obliteration of pervious areas due to urbanization. This chapter discusses holistic flood risk management in the context of integrated flood risk management, sustainability science, and transdisciplinary approach of Pasig-Marikina River Basin in Metro Manila. It notes how the cooperation of the concerned local government units (LGUs) in collaboration with the national government are needed to make this successful.]
