Abstract

[Healthcare for people with obesity is optimized when all members of the healthcare team recognize and reduce their weight bias. Validated tools are available to assist clinicians and other healthcare team members in identifying their implicit and explicit bias so that it can be explored and understood. Education is a key strategy for reducing bias in healthcare. Clinicians, clinicians-in-training, educators, preceptors, and other members of the healthcare team need to be educated about obesity, the deleterious effects of weight bias, and strategies for reducing it. When clinicians identify patients’ internalized bias, they can respond with compassion and provide education about bias and obesity, which will optimize their patients’ health.]
