[Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the world’s leading cause of mortality, claiming over 17 million lives per year [1]. In the United States alone, over 800,000 individuals died from CVD in 2013, or about one-third of all deaths that year, making CVD the leading cause of death in the nation [2, 3]. Coronary heart disease accounts for just under half of CVD deaths, and with cerebrovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease, comprises the atherosclerotic vascular diseases (ASVD). The annual incidence of global ASVD mortality is expected to rise to an estimated 23.6 million deaths by the year 2030.
