[There have been two major tendencies in the history of mathematics—theorem-proving and algorithm-creating. While theorem-proving, which originated in ancient Greece, has been the backbone of the deductive tradition in the history of mathematics, the algorithm-creating style flourished in the ancient and medieval Orient, where a strong algorithmic tendency shaped the evolution of mathematics in the East. In comparison with the deductive tradition, this algorithmic direction has only recently become the focus of historical studies aimed at showing its function and influence. The development of modern computer techniques, however, has helped draw the attention of mathematicians and historians to the importance of this algorithmic tradition in the history of mathematics.]
