Abstract
[Fashion history discloses the relationship between objective reality and subjective reason—a central aspect of Hegel’s philosophy of history. Fashion history also helps us comprehend how “objective” history is related to the development of human freedom, another key feature of Hegel’s philosophy of history. Not only does fashion’s close connection with the spirit of the times point to the link between fashion history and Hegelian history, but fashion is also that which assists us in grasping the mechanism of the actualization of freedom in modern times. By observing fashion’s role in shaping individualism in modern times, and with recourse to Hegelian philosophy, this chapter unpacks how fashion history as an indispensable part of cultural history is related to an objective realization of the spirit of modern times, and how freedom plays an important role in the progression of fashion history, as it does in the development of human history.]
