CHAPTER 1 1.1 WRITING ADVANCES THINKING Students and teachers often overemphasize collecting information, while not placing enough importance on the analytical thinking and communication required for establishing discoveries. This handbook will help demystify analytical writing, and through writing will improve the quality of thinking and communication for ideas essential for making decisions in both the professional and personal arenas. The goal of this handbook is to facilitate writing skills that reduce barriers to completing projects, forming recommendations, and making decisions. Analytical writing connects to critical thinking, as in the adage: “Writing clarifies thought.” Writing forces more clear recognition of the issues because explaining ideas to readers reveals gaps in logic. Also, writing invariably leads to new ideas, even for experts who understand a field. Finally, writing lets others understand your thinking about a matter, attributes ideas to you, and becomes the basis for further discussion and writing. Writing advances thinking when authors create mul- tiple drafts of manuscripts to improve organization, fill gaps in reasoning, or discover new issues that enrich understanding.
