CHAPTER 9 9.1 DO NOT PROCRASTINATE Analytical writing is a rewarding adventure, often providing the foundation for important deci- sions. When committing to such a writing assignment, by far the best approach is to immediately begin the writing process. Delays in starting the writing process will only create problems. Students learning analytical writing skills often struggle with time management issues as they cope with classes, jobs, social needs, and other commitments. Similarly, professionals with analytical writing responsibilities may have too many writing projects among many other responsi- bilities. Unfortunately, a common way to cope with competing demands is to delay work on writing assignments and responsibilities. Analytical writing requires time to acquire information, develop objectives, draw conclu- sions, and produce a polished report. Delaying the start of a project ensures that the author will not have adequate time to succeed with the project. Worse still, starting a project with too little time to complete it is neither fun nor rewarding. Writers who are part of a writing team must avoid the temptation to procrastinate, and be certain to set and meet target dates for specific writing products.
