[This chapter provides a brief introduction to the Creole Republic—what the term “Creole” means and a snapshot of things as they are in Trinidad and Tobago in the present (2020). It suggests that the reason for the social and economic issues which have persisted for most of its history, which saw disparate peoples brought to the island from the early nineteenth century, was the stark differences in culture and ethnicity. It then gives an overview of the contemporary ethnic and political situations, including the segmentation of the population, and proposes a historical line of causation from the nineteenth century when Indian immigration began.]
