Abstract

[Even if the analysis is limited to the period from the birth of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 to the new millennium, an economic history of wine in Italy represents a challenge, an effort to arrive at a synthesis from an abundance of material, research leads, and scenarios to reconstruct. Authors’ goal is to illustrate the evolution of Italian viticulture and winemaking under the same regulations from the first laws concerning the Italian wine sector to the New Millennium with the effects related to the great globalisation of wine markets and the strong technological innovations concerning oenology. In 160 years, the Italian wine sector was able to strongly modernise and renovate itself adapting its products to international trends and progressively building the current excellent reputation of the Italian wine in the world markets. In the second half of the nineteenth century, most of Italian wines had a local market or they were used in foreign countries to “cut” the local wine increasing its alcoholic content. In the new millennium, Italy is one of the main world producers (the first one in the last years), and its high-quality wines are exported everywhere.]
