A History of the Dublin Metropolitan Police and its Colonial Legacy: Policing a Capital City
Dukova, Anastasia
2016-10-11 00:00:00
[The chapter introduces the topography of the Dublin Metropolitan District, the socio-economic context and its boundaries and divisions, correlating the specific criminal trends associated with them. The police court reports and the statistical tables of the Dublin Metropolitan Police spanning from 1860 to 1880, help recreate a clearer picture of a predominantly working-class Dublin, where thousands of men and women found themselves almost daily on either side of the dock. Similar to the Dublin topography, criminal hotspots of the colonial capitals formed around the commercial centres, industrial houses and overpopulated areas. Drawing on the police court records predominantly from Dublin, but also London, Brisbane and Toronto, Dukova explores whether the urban policing experience varied within and across these cities.]
