Abbott took his BA (in history and literature) at Harvard in 1970 and his Ph.D. (in sociology) from the University of Chicago in 1982. During 1973–1978 he worked at Research and Evaluation Department, Manteno State Hospital. Prior to his return to Chicago, he taught for thirteen years at Rutgers University from 1978 to 1991.]
