7.1 Parameters, agent, group and system dynamics 109 7 Clusters as co-evolving N/K systems As has been spelled out in the previous sections, clusters can be understood as complex, co-evolving systems, where different agent groups control a subset of the system. Agent activities are influenced by the rules provided in the local cul- ture and their outcome exhibits an interdependence spanning across groups, which is attributable to the effects of agglomeration externalities. It has also emerged from Chaps. 5 and 6 that analysing the behaviour of such systems from an N/K perspective requires two things: A definition and setting of values for the different control parameters (N, K, C and S) as well as an understanding of the dynamics of and interrelation between the different levels of the system (agent, group, system). This section therefore starts by sketching out how clusters can be depicted in the N/K framework. More precisely, Sect. 7.1 outlines what elements of the clus- ter constitute the control parameters N, K, C and S and how agent, group and sys- tem dynamics relate to one another. From these aspects, part 7.2 develops a ra- tionale for including the division of labour and the mode of
