A Life Cycle for Clusters?Introduction: Clusters, change and adaptation

A Life Cycle for Clusters?: Introduction: Clusters, change and adaptation 1 Introduction: Clusters, change and adaptation This study deals with the factors shaping the outcome of adverse change events in industrial clusters. Such periods of crisis are likely to occur throughout the devel- opment of virtually any cluster when events affecting their area or industry call for a change in current practice to retain competitiveness. In many instances, a failure to adapt to such events has meant economic decline for the local industry with of- ten severe repercussions for the prosperity of entire areas as is witnessed by the many old industrial regions throughout the world. However, other cases exist in which agents in the cluster were able to accommodate the change event, thereby allowing the local industry to survive. By dealing with the factors underlying suc- cess or failure of cluster agent adaptation, this study thus contributes to our under- standing of the circumstances under which a decline of the local industry can be avoided. The relevance of this research question, i.e. whether, how and when clus- ter agents can successfully adapt to change events emerges from three aspects. First, there is significant empirical evidence of and political as well as theoretic at- tention dedicated to the phenomenon http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

1 Introduction: Clusters, change and adaptation This study deals with the factors shaping the outcome of adverse change events in industrial clusters. First, there is significant empirical evidence of and political as well as theoretic at- tention dedicated to the phenomenon
