[Each bariatric surgical procedure has advantages and disadvantages in regard to potential postsurgical complications, including gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia development. The most commonly performed bariatric procedures include laparoscopic placement of adjustable gastric band (LAGB), laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LAGB), and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). In order to minimize postoperative complications, patient risk factors for complications associated with bariatric surgery should be identified and mitigated through preoperative assessment and consultation. This chapter reviews the stages of preoperative assessment for bariatric procedures, different surgical considerations and complications associated with LAGB, RYGB, and SG, and the appropriate management of these complications.]
