[A short esophagus is a well-recognized risk factor for failure of an antireflux procedure, accounting for 20–43% of all surgical failures after this procedure. Literature shows that short esophagus may be present in 3–14% of patients undergoing primary antireflux surgery. The essential concept of SE is that adequate intra-abdominal esophageal length cannot be achieved even after maximal esophageal mobilization.
