Abstract

[The verbatim accounts of women living in the Upper East Region of Ghana about their experiences of childbirth and experiences of living with obstetric fistula were revisited with a focus on the politico-economic and socio-cultural conditions that allow the preventable problem of obstetric fistula to continue in Ghana. Based upon data collected for a master’s in Nursing thesis, the problem of obstetric fistula was treated as a case study of gender disparities in health, drawing on the concepts of intersectionality, human rights, and a lifespan approach—the latter being necessary if the problem is to be eradicated. It was clear from the women’s accounts that their disadvantaged situations due to the remoteness of their habitations (long distances from healthcare facilities), illiteracy, poverty, and cultural inhibitions contribute toward the perpetuation of the problem of obstetric fistula in the Upper East Region. Finally, we endorsed the recommendations in the Ghana Health Service’s recent Report on the Burden of Obstetric Fistula in Ghana. Perhaps the most critical thing needed to make progress in eradicating obstetric fistula in Ghana is the political will to put these recommendations into action.]
