[In 184, the Yellow Scarf Uprising (黄巾起义, 184–185) initiated by ZHANG Jiao (张角, ?–184), an anonymous Daoist in present-day Ning-jin, He-bei Province (河北宁晋), inflicted a fatal blow to the East Han Dynasty, terminated its “unification” (大一统), and plunged China into a turmoil of warfare between different warlords. In 220, when CAO Pi (曹丕, 167–226) of Wei first styled himself as emperor, LIU Bei (刘备, 161–223) of Shu and SUN Quan (孙权, 182–252) of Wu followed suit, and the so-called Three-Kingdom Era (三国) of Wei (魏, 220–265), Shu (蜀, 221–263), and Wu (吴, 222–280) thus came into being.]
