[In 1982, NASA promoted plans to use the space shuttle to build a Space Operations Center in Earth orbit that would lead to a private industrial space facility. Thus the third shuttle flight’s Office of Space Sciences (OSS) experiments and the Induced Environment Contamination Monitor would characterize the electromagnetic and particulate environment for future telescopes and assembly operations, while several middeck experiments tested processes that were hoped to lead to manufacturing in space. The Electrophoresis Verification Test experiment was to separate blood using electricity for McDonnell Douglas and Johnson and Johnson’s Ortho Pharmaceutical, and a Monodisperse Latex Reactor would create beads to calibrate microscopes. The first Get-Away-Special, a canister using spare space in the bay, would fly, as well as the first student experiment called “the bug box” that generated a lot of publicity for NASA.]
