[The care of patients with thyroid disease illustrates the general principles upon which the field of nuclear medicine is based. Its procedures are used to examine the chemistry of the thyroid by means of radiation detectors outside the body. The information is dynamic, rather than static.Space and time are joined in documenting quantitatively the chemistry of the living human body. The tools of nuclear medicine examine and characterize quantitatively the dynamic state of the processes that are the basis of life.Disease can be detected before the “constancy” of the constituents of the body has become abnormal and is reflected in blood tests. These tests reveal the “steady state” of the abnormal processes that have become abnormal after compensatory biochemical processes become unable to solve the patient’s problems.]
