[Why care about schools, and what role does caring have in schooling? There is an ethical theory that puts care at its heart, and this says that care must be mutual. Care is presented here as the foundation of this philosophy of schooling, the basis of epistemology (caring for the object of study) and ontology (persons as inherently mutual carers). Schools, with all their conflicts and inequalities are therefore also, intentionally, mutual and egalitarian institutions. Learning in schools is a form of mutual care: subjects are studied for the sake of making ‘better people’ (in Noddings’ phrase). Care is challenged by external performativity and functional drivers, but we should care about schools precisely because caring can, and must, be central to all school activities.]
