[In a just world, this chapter would be redundant. The UK is a wealthy nation — the world’s sixth-largest economy (or perhaps eighth-largest when you take international financial exchange rates into account). It has a moral duty to spend some of that wealth on the general benefit of its citizens, especially in times of economic difficulty. As I mentioned in the introductory chapter, the World Health Organization now regards mental health problems as the leading cause of disability worldwide, and has estimated that they cost as much as $2,500 billion worldwide in 2010. In the UK, around 6,000 people take their own lives each year, and mental health issues have been estimated as costing the UK economy as much as £105 billion each year. So it’s worth spending some money on truly effective services.]
